Research Project
NEW CONNECTIONS

Searching for new connections during the pandemic and in post-COVID-19 world

I. Background

The COVID 19 pandemic isolated people around the world in the first half of 2020, while making them dependent on the internet to carry out their daily activities and to share their lives. Social distancing has been deeply imbedded in day to day life, creating the surreal image of people walking on the streets with their faces covered with masks despite the clear, pollution-free air. People avoid staying in a confined space. Group gatherings invoke feelings of fear, guilt or a sense of responsibility.  Although the surrealness is fading, can we go back to how things used to be? As we are entering the era of COVID-19, we wonder if we can we go back to the time before COVID-19. Can we visit theatres and festivals again without feeling fear, guilt or a sense of responsibility? In the midst of the great uncertainty around the world, we are defying social and physical distance to share our experience and valuable information so that we can discuss and explore the roles of art, artists and producers in the post-COVID-19 world.

II. Objective

- To have a discussion among artists from Korea and abroad about what art, artists and producers should consider during and after the pandemic, and to share the results with Korean performing art experts

- To discuss and explore new ways to carry out international exchange in the field of art during the time in which physical movement is not guaranteed

III. Dialog direction and discussion topics

Suggested dialog direction

-  Changes in personal lives

-  Changes and newly emerging dialogues in the field of art

-  The role of art in a post-COVID-19 society

-  New possibilities for international exchange during the mobility/environmental crisis

Suggested discussion topics

1. Here and now

-  How has the daily life and work of artists and producers changed?

-  What are the biggest threats COVID-19 poses to the ecosystem of art and to the work of artists?

-  What is the level of awareness of the new normal for art in the field or attitudes towards it?

-  Are there any examples of social or creative activity by artists after the emergence of COVID-19?

2. New imagination in art in the era of uncertainty

-  What do artists and producers think the art of the post-COVID-19 era will be like?

-  What is a likely future for art in the environment affected by COVID-19?

-  The link between natural disasters and social disasters is getting stronger, and global issues such as the environment and climate change are becoming more important. What is the role of art in society? What are the values that artists need to pay more attention to and to rethink the meaning of?

- The ongoing mobility crisis makes international exchange based on physical movement difficult. How will international exchange change in the post-COVID-19 era?
